How to Water New Sod: A Week-by-Week Guide for Homeowners
July 29, 2024

Watering is one of the most critical parts of caring for new sod. Do it right, and your grass will root quickly and grow strong. Do it wrong, and you risk dry patches, rot, or even total lawn failure.

At Texas Sod Pros, we make sod installation easy—and we’re here to help you keep it healthy. Use this week-by-week watering guide to support proper rooting and long-term lawn success.

Week 1: Keep It Soaked

Goal: Saturate the sod and topsoil to help roots bond with the ground.

  • Water 2–3 times daily
  • Early morning, midday, and late afternoon are best
  • Keep the sod consistently moist, not puddled
  • Avoid walking on the lawn during this time

Pro tip: Lift a corner of the sod. If it's wet underneath and feels cool, you’re doing it right.

Week 2: Reduce Frequency, Maintain Moisture

Goal: Begin encouraging root growth deeper into the soil.

  • Water once or twice a day, depending on temperature
  • Ensure the top 1–2 inches of soil stay moist
  • Begin cutting back midday watering, unless temperatures are extreme

Caution: Still no mowing or heavy use—roots are still forming.

Week 3: Encourage Deep Root Growth

Goal: Shift toward deeper, less frequent watering.

  • Water every other day (in the early morning only)
  • Apply enough water to soak the soil 4–6 inches deep
  • Begin mowing if the sod is firmly rooted and dry at the time of mowing

Pro tip: Mow with sharp blades and avoid removing more than 1/3 of the grass height.

Week 4 and Beyond: Transition to Normal Watering

Goal: Establish long-term hydration habits.

  • Water 2–3 times per week, depending on rainfall
  • Continue morning watering to prevent evaporation
  • Monitor for signs of stress (curling blades, gray-green color)

Common Watering Mistakes to Avoid

  • Underwatering: Causes shrinkage, dry patches, and root failure
  • Overwatering: Leads to fungus, rot, and shallow root systems
  • Inconsistent timing: Watering at random times increases stress on sod
  • Walking too soon: Foot traffic before rooting can shift or damage sod
