New Sod Care 101: How to Keep Your Fresh Lawn Alive and Thriving
April 14, 2025

Getting new sod is exciting—it instantly transforms your yard with lush, green grass. But to keep it looking great, your fresh lawn needs the right care in the first few weeks after installation.

At Texas Sod Pros, we not only install your sod professionally, but we also give you the tools and knowledge to help it thrive. Here’s your step-by-step guide on how to care for new sod properly.

💧 Week 1: Water, Water, Water

Goal: Keep the sod moist at all times to help roots establish.

  • Water 2 to 3 times per day, for 10–15 minutes per zone
  • Water in early morning and late afternoon
  • Avoid watering late in the evening to prevent fungus

🚫 Don’t let the sod dry out—lift a corner and check for moisture underneath. Dry roots = failed sod.

🌱 Week 2–3: Reduce Frequency, Increase Depth

Goal: Encourage deeper root growth.

  • Water once per day, for 20–30 minutes
  • Focus on soaking the soil 3–4 inches deep
  • Watch for signs of yellowing or wilting and adjust accordingly

Your sod should begin to "knit" into the soil and feel firmer underfoot.

✂️ First Mow: Wait Until It’s Ready

Don’t mow too soon. Wait until the sod is:

  • At least 3–4 inches tall
  • Rooted well enough that it doesn’t lift when tugged

Set your mower high (no more than 1/3 of the blade removed) and use sharp blades to avoid tearing.

🚫 Avoid Foot Traffic for 2–3 Weeks

New sod is fragile and needs time to take root. Avoid:

  • Walking on the lawn
  • Letting pets or kids play on it
  • Heavy equipment or furniture

This helps prevent indentations and keeps roots from separating from the soil.

🌾 Fertilizing and Weed Control

  • Apply a starter fertilizer before or right after installation
  • Avoid weed treatments until at least 3–4 weeks after install
  • Watch for fungus—water early in the day to let grass dry before nightfall

If unsure, we can recommend the best local products or apply them for you.

🧤 Ongoing Maintenance Tips

  • Water 2–3 times per week once fully rooted
  • Mow regularly, but never too short
  • Watch for pests, brown patches, or signs of overwatering

A little attention early on goes a long way toward a thick, healthy lawn.
